DePauw students, faculty, and staff do have a climate-friendly way to get from the main campus to the Prindle Institute. In October 2007, the University purchased 100 Kona AfricaBike and installed additional bike racks to enable members of the campus community to get around conveniently without driving. AfricaBikes, originally designed as durable, low-maintenance means for home health care workers to deliver antiretroviral drugs for HIV/AIDS patients in Botswana, are now also sold as commuting bicycles in the U.S.

For every two AfricaBikes sold, Kona donates one to Bicycling Magazine’s BikeTown Africa project or to other non-profit organizations working to improve the quality of life in sub-Saharan Africa. In celebration of Arts Fest 2007: Arts and the Environment, students used the bikes as their canvases, presenting them as works of public art that functionally signify the university’s commitment to social and environmental responsibility.
