The students are the center of the Janet Prindle Institute for Ethics. Most of the programming at the Institute is directed toward the students and involves their participation at every level. In addition to lectures, workshops and discussion forums, the Institute offers several different types of individual grants and awards to students.

Undergraduate Ethics Symposium, April 1-3, 2010

This Symposium affords an outstanding opportunity for student scholars and creative writers to present and discuss their ethics-related work with leading scholars and creative writers in their fields and to participate in a significant discussion of ethical concerns. It is anticipated that the Institute will publish a Symposium volume, which, in addition to the presentations by the visiting scholars and creative writers, will include selected students works. The Prindle Institute will pay travel and lodging expenses for the students whose works are selected. See Call for Essays and Creative Writing Projects and Conference Schedule. For further information contact Coordinator of the Ethics Institute, Martha Rainbolt, rainbolt@depauw.edu.

Student Interns

This year seven undergraduates will serve as paid student interns at The Prindle Institute. The Undergraduate Interns constitute the Student Advisory Committee, which is chaired by the Lead Undergraduate Intern, and advises the Director regarding student involvement at the Institute. These students provide energy, commitment and multiple perspectives. They also act as hosts for visitors to the Institute, keep the web page current, and, most importantly, help to plan programs for students. For more information, contact Hallie Moberg, halliemoberg_2011@depauw.edu.

Ethics Bowl Team

For nine years DePauw has sponsored a team in the Ethics Bowl competition. On November 1, 2008, the team won the Central States Regional Competition, advancing to the National Competition on March 5, 2009. Last year, the team placed second at the regional competition and then advanced to the quarter-final round of the national competition in San Antonio, Texas. Robert Newton and Marcia McKelligan, professors in the philosophy department, as well as Nicholas Casalbore, the Prindle Institute Graduate Intern, were the coaches of the team and selected its members. Any student who is interested should contact Marcia McKelligan (mamck@depauw.edu).

Student/Faculty Summer Research

The objective of the summer research fund is to increase the opportunities for faculty and students to work together on research projects in the summer. The project and the proposal should be a collaborative effort of the faculty member and the student. The project should be of value to both the faculty member and the student. The student is expected to have the qualifications to do successful work and a product from the research is expected by the end of the summer. In addition to the fifteen projects ordinarily funded by Faculty Development, additional projects will be funded by the Prindle Institute for Ethics.

The funding will consist of an honorarium of $3,800 for the student, an honorarium of $2,500 for the faculty member, and a maximum of $400 for materials for the project. The $400 allotted for each student covers research related expenses but not computers. This is based on the assumption that the projects will last 10 weeks, and that the student will work full time (40 hours per week) and faculty members will work half-time (20 hours per week). The stipends will be prorated for projects of shorter duration. (For further information and application forms, see the Faculty Development website.)
